Selwyn Community Facilities Network Strategy

Selwyn Community Facilities Network Strategy

Otium is excited to be partnering with Selwyn District Council to develop their Community Facilities Network Strategy (CFNS) — a forward-looking framework to guide how community facilities are planned, owned, operated and invested in across the district.

We recently kicked off the project with a series of staff workshops, generating valuable insights into current provision, key challenges and future opportunities for the Selwyn community.

The strategy will bring together four specialised network plans:

  • Aquatics Facilities
  • Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums
  • Indoor Courts
  • Community Halls and Centres.

Together, these will form an integrated strategic framework — ensuring community facilities across Selwyn are well-connected, sustainable and built to serve the community long into the future.

We’re looking forward to working closely with Selwyn District Council to help make that vision a reality!

Recreation Aotearoa Green Pavlova 2026

Recreation Aotearoa Green Pavlova 2026

What a week in Aotearoa! 🌿

Otium Managing Director Kate Maddock travelled to New Zealand to join Otium NZ Director Jason Merrett at Green Pavlova 2026 — New Zealand’s premier conference for parks, play, and open spaces.

A huge congratulations to Recreation Aotearoa | Te Whai Oranga on an outstanding event centred on the theme He Taiao, He Tāngata, He Oranga | Our Places, Our People, Our Future.

Highlights for the Otium team:

✅ Presenting a session on Cost vs Impact featuring a real case study on how early, smart decision-making turns cost pressures into better design, partnerships, and outcomes.

✅ Kate participating along with PLA President Kristin Davies, Mark Bowater from Sport New Zealand, Geoff Canham from Thrive Spaces and Places and Sarah Murray from Recreation Aotearoa, on an international panel exploring the future of accessible, high-quality public space.

✅ Plenty of great conversations — old connections rekindled and new ones made.

Events like this remind us why the work we do in parks and public spaces matters so much. 💚

Nunweek Park Pavilion Feasibility Study

Nunweek Park Pavilion Feasibility Study

We’re midway through the Nunweek Park Pavilion Feasibility Study for the Canterbury Hockey Association — a project exploring future pavilion options to support participation, performance, and long-term sustainability at the regional level.

A key focus so far has been targeted engagement with local hockey clubs and wider sector stakeholders. These conversations have surfaced how existing facilities are functioning, the pressures they’re under, and what a future pavilion genuinely needs to deliver. That insight is now directly shaping the project’s direction and ensuring the feasibility work stays grounded in real-world use and operational realities.

The next phase translates this feedback into a clear functional brief, followed by concept design development and high-level cost planning. These elements will be tested with the project steering group to explore viable options, staging, and funding pathways — before being brought together into a robust feasibility assessment to support future decision-making.

Projects like this highlight the importance of combining meaningful stakeholder engagement with practical analysis to shape facility outcomes that are both aspirational and deliverable.

Success for Kwinana Regional Open Space Project

Great communities deserve great spaces to play. 🏀

We were very pleased to learn that the City of Kwinana has endorsed the Kwinana Regional Open Space (KROS) Feasibility and Business Case, which proposes a regional sport and recreation facility featuring 10 indoor courts and outdoor hardcourts.

Otium Director Dave Lanfear worked closely with the Kwinana team to develop and prepare the Feasibility Study and Business Case for the project, which will deliver much-needed sport and recreation infrastructure to the growing region and help build long-term community wellbeing. A fantastic outcome for everyone involved!

Inverell Aquatic Centre One-Year Anniversary

Inverell Aquatic Centre One-Year Anniversary

We congratulate the Inverell Shire Council on the one-year operating anniversary of the Inverell Aquatic Centre!

Officially opened in September 2025, the facility, managed by Belgravia Leisure, has had a very successful inaugural year, exceeding several key business case projections:

  • More than 60,000 visitors in its first year of operation.
  • Over 200 health, wellness, and aquatic members.
  • More than 600 learn‑to‑swim enrolments.
  • Host of the NSW Regional Swimming Championships in January 2026.
  • Venue for 10 school swimming carnivals throughout February 2026.

Otium has been privileged to support the Council across multiple stages of this project, including the initial feasibility study, preparation of advocacy materials and a business case for successful funding applications, specialist input into the functional and technical design brief, financial modelling, development of the management contract, support during the facility commissioning and opening, and ongoing contract management advisory services.

It is fantastic to see the Centre thriving and delivering significant community, health, and economic benefits to Inverell and the surrounding region – a testament to the Council’s vision and commitment. We look forward to its continued growth and to its contributions to the community.
